Spotlight, 2015 - ★★★★★

Finally, a movie worthy of winning the Oscar for Best Picture! **Spotlight** was a tremendous job done by all, from the writers to the actors to the wonderful director, Tom McCarthy (if you haven't seen his *The Station Agent*, drop everything right now and watch it!).

*Spotlight* tells the true story of a grim and disturbing story a team of investigative reporters uncover - evidence of a coverup from the highest level of the Catholic Church, covering up a most heinous crime - molesting and raping children. Despite having leads to this before, the Boston Globe Spotlight team final delves into it, and quickly uncover a plot to move these monsterous priests around to mitigate their deeds.

The actors are really wonderful in this. The work they put in is never glamorized - just hard work as they uncover the unbelievable truth. You can read the actual story, published in January of 2002 [here](www.bostonglobe.com/news/special-reports/2002/01/06/church-allowed-abuse-priest-for-years/cSHfGkTIrAT25qKGvBuDNM/story.html). And [here](www.bostonglobe.com/arts/movies/spotlight-movie/) is the full Globe page on *Spotlight* the movie. I highly encourage you to read [this story](www.bostonglobe.com/arts/movies/2014/11/29/spotlightfilm-intro/d8Tp3MQ4Y0OQA3JZgABkeO/story.html), which is where the real reporters tell of how hard the actors worked to get into their minds and actions. Mark Ruffalo should certainly have won the Oscar for Best Actor, but Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, and Brian d'Arcy James were tremendous as the reporters as well. And I though Liev Schrieber's Marty Baron was wonderfully understated and powerful.

Truly a "Must See" movie.

Elite Squad: The Enemy Within, 2010 - ★★★★

Not bad. A little confusing though. Maybe because it is the second movie and I never saw the first. Maybe a little because it has lots of Brazilian politics and acronyms. But it was exciting and kept you guessing.

Slow West, 2015 - ★★★★

[Slow West](www.imdb.com/title/tt3205376) is a UK / New Zealand movie about a Scottish lad trying to find his true love in the US West. And somehow, these disparate parts come together in a memorable Western, complete with odd characters, strange situations and, of course, explosions of violence.

Jay Cavendish [Kodi Smit-McPhee](www.imdb.com/name/nm2240346) is a teenaged boy, recently arrived from Scotland, wandering the western US in search of his true love. He is befriended by a mercenary stranger, Silas (played with typical bravado by [Michael Fassbender](www.imdb.com/name/nm1055413), who offers to guide him to her. Also on their trail is Payne and his gang. After a few adventures (including one of drinking too much absinthe), they finally find Rose, which leads inevitably to paroxsyms of violence and shooting.

*Slow West* is a low key Western, chock full of strange situations, a very direct descendant of the [Jim Jarmusch](www.imdb.com/name/nm0000464) / [Johnny Depp](www.imdb.com/name/nm0000136) classic [*Dead Man*](www.imdb.com/title/tt0112817/) (go see this now if you haven't!) and a close relative of the Coen Brothers' [True Grit](www.imdb.com/title/tt1403865). While I am not a fan of "quest" movies, this one doesn't wander too long, clocking in at just about an hour and a half. This is director [John Maclean](www.imdb.com/name/nm3304468)'s feature debut (both as a write and director) and he does a great job. He was in [The Beta Band](en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beta_Band) and directed their music videos and he show's a steady hand.

While some of it was kind of paint by numbers, there were definite flashes of inspiration. The final shootout was sharp and exciting, and included a few droll touches.

Highly recommended for fans of offbeat Westerns.

The Drop, 2014 - ★★★★½

Tom Hardy is amazing. He inhabited the persona of the schlub bartender at a nothing bar with so much going on behind that noone knew about and it was totally believable. Gandolfino was great too, as was Noomi Rapace. But the cute pit bull stole the show! Really a great little movie.
